Hi All,

I am in the process of building the following server:

  • Case: Fractal Design Define R4 ATX Tower Case Black Pearl
  • Power Supply: Corsair Professional Series HX750 750W ATX Fully Modular 80PLUS Gold Power
  • Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V Pro P8Z77-V PRO - Motherboards - ASUS
  • Memory: "G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 2400MHz CL10 DualChannel Kit (F3-2400C10D-16GTX)"
  • CPU: Intel Core i7 3770 Quad Core Hyperthreading Processor LGA1155 3.4GHZ Ivy Bridge 8MB Retail
  • CPU Cooler: " Noctua NH-D14 LGA1155/1156/1366/AM3 I7/I5/PHENOM Heatpipe Cooler w/ NF-P14 140mm & NF-P12 120mm Fan "
  • Boot SSD: 2X (Raid 1 mirror) Samsung 840 Series 120GB 2.5in SATA3 MDX Solid State Disk Flash Drive SSD
  • Data: 2X (Raid 1 mirror) 4TB Seagate SATA 3
  • DVD: ASUS DRW-24F1ST 24X SATA DVD Writer Black

Question:

When I attempt to install VSphere 5.1 it complains about the NIC Adapter, so I presume that it is not discovering the onboard NiC

  • Intel 82579V, 1 x Gigabit LAN Controller(s)
  • Intel LAN- Dual interconnect between the Integrated LAN controller and Physical Layer (PHY)

How can I enable VSphere 5.1 to be able to use this NIC?

Question:

If I were to go but a standalone one port 10/100/1000 NIC adapter, which NIC adapter should I get, I am looking at the compatibility guide and I get lost... I would like to get a new NIC from newegg or somewhere, but which one?

My thought process is to buy the additional NIC to get past the installation, then once installed I imagine I can play with the driver to see if I can get the onboard mobo NIC to work, if it does I will use one NIC for VCenter and the other for VM's

Thoughts and help

Thank you

D
